Should the Services Provided by Commercial and Investment Banks Be Separated (Ohoukoh K.)

Bank Products and Diversification Investment Banking Regulation

Abstract This paper poses the question of financial system design and banking industry structure. Specifically, it addresses the question of regulation of structure: which firms are qualified to develop a certain type of activity? We found that regulating the scope of the activities of banking institutions is a first step toward limiting their risk taking capability. As such, in the perspectives of risk management, regulations of the banking industry should address both regulation of structure and that of scope.
